The ball joints and their connectors are in Lego Technic dimensions (sort of)
while the arms and the legs are in Lego System, therefore, the two don't match
exactly and when there is an overlap rather than a gap you get extra friction
(LOTS of extra friction). It's not obvious in the arms, but you can see how
the joints at the hips bend from the extra force exerted on them.

A bit of both. I must have wasted a good $200+ just to get extra pieces for
it. I hope to finish the darn thing one of these days, summer vacation is
having a very negative effect on me (that and the new game Mechwarrior Dark
Age).
