How about using the 10x10 nets? <http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/x101>
They'd make a very sheer membrane, especially since they're made out of
black string, but they are bigger than the capes. You could attach 1xN
plates to the nets to make them more visible. Or overlap the nets, to
decrease the transparency.
You could use string-with-end-studs to attach the net to the
wing-struts. Thread the string through the holes in the net(s), and
click the endstuds to wing.
To achieve a narrower tip, you could fold a net over the leading edge of
the wing, to make it triangular.
Just a weird thought....
