Hello all!
So I've been working on quite a bit since the LUGOLA meeting. I stumbled upon
something that might be of interest to you mech builders out there.
So, you know those 1x4 brick hinges - the kind that have been around forever?
They have the potential to make good mech joints, but are too loose. They can
been stiffened as follows: Take a flexible tube (the kind that are the same
diameter as the light sabers) and jam it into the hole that joins the two parts
of the hinge; then, just cut off the excess! The result is a very stiff joint
that can be combined with other joints that can be stiffened (i.e. plastic wrap
around Technic friction pins) to make a strong yet compact hip region, complete
with all of the neccesary motions. Don't try using other things, though (i.e.
light sabers, antennae) - they're too rigid, and distort the hinge.
For me, 70% of mech building goes into hip design. Each of my mechs (from
Aldebaran to Cepheus to Chiron to Regulus) uses completely different joint
mechanisms; besides Cepheus, my mech designs have been sort of plain.
Hopefully, with this new method, I can standardize the system a bit more, and
focus more on other aspects of the design.
But Cepheus fans, don't worry! There is a bigger version already under
construction! And there may be other individuals who will explore the
endoskeleton theme as well, although I won't mention any names ;-)
Happy building all! Keep those mechs coming!
Christopher
