I got the idea from Greg Williams a while ago. I've used these stickfigs
(1) before, here:

I think Stephen Roberts (and maybe others) has also published models with
these little guys too.
I really like working with these stickfigs since they help me keep a
perspective of the scale. It's *much* easier to eyeball the model and say,
"nope, it's too big" or "too small". Also, I can focus more energy into the
actual model and spend less time trying to get the little guys looking right.
