Hello Brian,
as far as I can see on your pics the rotational part of the joints doesnt
stand the weight. Try to rebuild the hip like in your first attempt.
Without the rotational part under weight it might hold. You also can improve
the strength of the nonrotational joints by doubling them.
When building mecha gravity is your most dangerous enemy!

| (...) Marco, you were correct. It was the rotational part of the joints that caused the collapse. Once I switched the joints around, they held the weight.
