spindly legs

I attached the leg prototypes to see if the joints were strong enough.

under compression

I had to beef up the thigh worm joint a bit with a longer shaft and more bushings. If you look closely you can also see that the axle twists a good 30 degrees under load. Thanks to hovercraft skirt footpads, there’s enough traction to keep the joints from getting too stressed.

more beef

The open face joint design could allow for attachment to the body through the face of the gear at the four pin holes, eliminating the central axle twist (my fallback design) but it isn’t necessary for this model.

knobby knee

Doubled up AT-AT knee hinges work well for the knee joints, and I might want to leave the interesting circular face exposed.

Next I’ll apply a skin to the lower legs. I’m wondering though if the contest picture mecha really has practical footpads. I don’t see how it can really walk well, unless the heel retracts, or the lower foot can bend upwards. Looks like the front leg armor plate might cover a big hydraulic piston.

ps. Security allows these images out only because they are mostly irrelevant. ;-)

(...) Sweet! I really like the way you concealed the worm gear joints in the legs. I guess I couldn't tell before whether or not worm gears were used in you model - I would have been a little disppointed if they weren't ;-) Later, Chris (19 years ago, 10-Jan-06, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

Humbles himself before the genius that is Klaupicus once again. :) Excellent job, Brian. The wormgear solution is pretty amazing. I'm very curious to see how you come up with the leg armor. Take care, -Dave (19 years ago, 11-Jan-06, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

Hello Brian, I'm so curious how this will look when finished. Great job so far (URL) Marco> (19 years ago, 11-Jan-06, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
