Progress Pics Part 2: Thigh Joints

I call it an “open face worm joint”. It’s made possible by exploiting the flanged axle’s self retaining capability.

It allows the thigh to be very narrow, and plate skinned, while still having a worm gear driving a medium gear in a completly locked setup (ie. won’t fall apart under torque). You actuate the joint by rolling the worm gear directly with your finger.

The axle in the joint will twist under load, but it can still support all the weight necessary.

This is joined to the body by a reinforced off center pivot that gives good outward leg splay and lengthens what you might call the “wheelbase” of the chassis, in car terms.

Next, the knee joints.
