Just wanted to send out a big word of thanks to Jeff for coordinating the Mecha
room at Brickfest 2005! This was my first Lego event of any kind, and I was
absolutely amazed at how cool it was. Jeff had the Mecha room set up with a
video screen, anime, a Gundam PSII game, and books full of Mecha art and photos
of models.
A huge thanks also to Brian Cooper for supplying Teknomeka CDs for prizes!
Adam shared joint-tech wizardry with the group--my key take-away is the power of
the double-jointed knee. Adams ALM mechs look great in photos, but to get the
full effect, you really need to handle them, they stand up under amazing loads,
and their mobility is outstanding.
We all sat around a table watching Jeremiah build a little chicken-leg mech out
of the four copies of Robo Platoon he bought on sale at the Lego outlet. Then
he stuck a Yoda head under the canopy! It was perfect.
Right around that time, the OWNER OF THE LEGO COMPANY strolled through the mech
room! He asked us what mecha was!
Heres me: Duh, um, its like a robot that has a pilot in it, duh, um...
(yeah, totally inarticulate)
Heres Jeff: Mecha is a translation of a Japanese word that essentially means
mechanical. The genre is characterized by...
Thanks for the save, Jeff. As he left the room, Kjeld was heard to comment,
Ive seen something similar in our development studios... So keep your
fingers crossed for mech sets from TLG!
One of the big surprises for me was how cool Pat Bunns mechs look in person. I
think they might be too detailed for photos to work real well.
So to summarize, Brickfest was awesome! If you havent attended before, I
encourage you to consider it next year, because I can tell you about it, but the
only way to know is to go!

| Update: Lee Magpili got a photo of Adam (blue shirt) doing his joint-tech presentation. That's me with the double-jointed knee--"Mmmmm, bendy" (URL) Thanks for Lee for snapping the pic! (19 years ago, 20-Aug-05, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
