I have been lurking, and occasionally commenting for some time on
mecha, without posting any mecha of my own (more stuff usually on
lugnet.robotics). Anyway - this week I opened my Titan XP kit - and
before I even built any of the instructed models (I started - but got
inspired before I got through the first mini-mech), I ended up putting
together a War Of The Worlds Fighting Machine Tripod Mecha.

http://orionrobots.co.uk/tiki-browse_gallery.php?galleryId=14

It all started when I made what looked like a microscale lighthouse. I
then made a boat, and it reminded me of the cover of the Geoff Wayne
War Of The Worlds album cover. The lighthouse, and first boat are in
the gallery.

I then turned the boat into a gunship (with th use of some rather
helpful minifig legs).
I started building the mecha, and the legs articulate out and back,
but not as much as I would like - I may revise it later.

I then decided to do a bit of microscale scenery, and did a mini
big-ben, with a few surrounding buildings, then tower bridge, and
finally some "burning London" backdrops with the orange bricks.

The mech itself is fairly simple/ad-hoc. it is not a replica of the
tripods on the album cover, but my own re-interpretation of the HG
Wells concept - including the heat-ray funnel.

The whole set, gunboat, mech, London parts and backdrop can all be
made simultaneously from the Titan XP designer set, and leaves a fair
amount behind (I wander if I can get two fighting machines out of
it?).

I also photoshoped a couple (using the GIMP), and even added a cheap
plasma heat-ray effect just for fun. Anyway - I have added furthar
comments to the gallery image descriptions, enjoy!

One question for regular mech builders - of all the groups I post to,
you guys are the most likely to use new and exotic parts and colours
first. How do you guys deal with CAD? LDraw seems to lack many of the
parts in the titan XP box, even in the unofficial parts lists.
