I built Primus BuS' Marauder. I'm finished with it down to the ankles.
However, the supplied design does not hold the mech's weight - it falls over
backwards when I try and stand it up.

So, is there any way to do an extremely strong ankle for such a large mech?

ARGH! Drew, you're kidding, aren't you? :/

'Fraid not.

Are you sure you put together all
sub-models as shown at the images? It is ESSENTIAL for the balance of the
whole model (since it is really large) that you connect all parts at the right
angle, and with both arms and PPCs added it is perfectly balanced and simply
cannot fall on its butt. The physical model I built doesn't have ANY problem
like that one you reported ... I can even knock the model slightly withthout
it falling over. If you made a mistake while putting together the model it
might be unbalanced, thus causing the ankles to break. With a balanced model,
the design of the ankles is supposed to be earthquake-and-small-brother-proof.
I have much faith in this design, so I'm pretty sure the ankles could even
support much more weight. Maybe you should try brand-new bricks, they may have
a better "grip"?

I'm buying a new collection just for this one mech :p

Several things.

1) No, my model isn't perfectly like the LDRAW version, as I lack a few of the
angle pieces. (Those stupid perfectly-curved 3x2 bricks - what set do they
come in?) However, it isn't modified enough (with bricks) that its balance
should be off.

2) I have not yet attached the arms and the PPCs yet. How much does this
affect the balance of the model?

3) My ankle joints are quite different. The pieces you used for attaching the
lower-leg to the foot pads - well, I've never seen it in any of the sets I've
ever built. My modifications probably affect the angles enough to modify the
balance.

4) I did a complete rebuild on the lower leg. I got the model to stand up
without any PPC's, completely unsupported. Basically, nevermind to this post.

good luck! ;)

I'm going to use the mech at the BrikWar event in Columbus, Ohio, next week.
I'll get a few pictures of it in. :)

You can get all technic parts you gonna need in order to build the ankles from current sets - if you just purchase supplementary packs you even won't have to spend much money. LEGO Technic Set 8226 "Off Roader" is a good source too. (24 years ago, 11-Aug-00, to lugnet.build.mecha)
