I didn't finish my primary model (a huge one) in time for the ISCC, but I
wanted to enter "something", so I brought out a MOC I made a month ago - the
Alpha Stinger, a snub-nosed aerospace fighter.

Great little model. It looks fierce! I'd hate to be a badguy facing it. I
especially like the background, where did you get it and how big is it? It
beats those sheets I used.

Thanks for the comments! I got the background by taking some hi-res shots of
the sky with a digital camera. That way, I can be assured of a non-copyright
violating, royalty free (and original) backdrop for my pictures.

It turned out pretty good considering it was my first attempt. I took a lot
of shots using different exposure settings, and it was one of those Midwest
days where the clouds started rolling in really fast.

I photographed the model against a blue backdrop (a 3 x 4 ft piece of
construction paper from Michaels') and then used the Photoshop Magic wand to
cut the Stinger out and transfer it to the sky background. It takes about 3
minutes per picture.

Joesph Gonzalez has a great webpage dedicated to Alternative Models from one
or two Lego sets, and his site inspired me to build my model. I think it's a
great site, and you can find it here:

This is a great site... the discipline of trying to use just one set to
build with is very creativity enhancing... I know I get in a rut because I
have so many parts to work with, I get mental blocks...

I think some of my most creative building happens when taking one or two
sets and modifying them. I get the same mental block as you do because of
all the parts I can choose from in my "open" collection. I guess
mathematically speaking, the closed box set limits your options to about 10
to the 50th power, instead of 10 to the billionth (or whatever) power with
all my parts.

There aren't as many good sets out there to build alternates from as there
used to be from Lego (well, maybe there are almost as many from a raw number
point of view, but as a percentage of Lego's entire lineup it certainly is
less). However, there are still a few good ones out there....
