So then no, the steeple isn't always to the west. :D
Doors are usually at the end of the nave (see below), or at least on one of the
transepts.

Tower is usually called the "Steeple".
The small additions on the sides are called "transepts".
The large middle area is called the "nave".
I *believe* in most churches the addition at the opposite end of the tower is
referred to as a "chapel".
As for what's correct, I personally beleive in Nicolas Hawksmoor's theories on
magnificence and terror. But that's just me.
