OK, I'll try to post to this group.  Maybe I can stir up some action.

I'm building an odd sort of police station.  An older version can be seen at
this link:  http://members.home.net/bhamilto1/city2/police.htm

I'm attempting to marry some stylistic elements of Gothic Architecture with
modern, Deconstructivism.  This is an odd combination indeed, but I think
its appropriate for the corrupt police force of my LEGO city.

Anyhow, in looking for ways to make this building more bizarre, I wanted to
give it a more interesting south facade (the side facing the camera in the
picture).

One of my favorite Gothic cathedrals is St. Maclou, in Rouen, France (here
are some pictures:
http://www.bluffton.edu/homepages/facstaff/sullivanm/maclou/maclou2.html)

It's very small, but very ornate!

I wanted to steal the curve front porch of this cathedral for my police
station.

I had had some success with using curved collonades in previous projects,
but with romanesque arches (See the middle part of the castle in:
http://members.home.net/bhamilto1/l1castle.htm )  Using the romanesque
arches is much easier because LEGO provides stock parts.  These parts are
very sturdy and large, so I was able to pull it off.

Unfortunately, for my new porch, I wanted gothic arches.  To fashion these,
I used a piece that slants from one stud to on the bottom to two studs on
the top, topped with a piece that starts with 1 stud on the bottom and goes
to 3 studs on the top.  This gives the gothic "bent" arch.  I used the same
"castle" (doric or plain) arches under the arch (see the Night Lords Castle
set).   The problem is that these gothic arches aren't very sturdy because
they are amalgamations of pieces.  I had repeated structural failures with
the 'bent' approach.  So, I finally gave up and went with a straight facade.
I suppose it looks more like the "traditional" gothic cathedrals like Riems
and Notre Dame, but I really would have prefered that curved look.

Does anyone have any ideas on creating more sturdy and/or more realistic
gothic arches?

I'll post pictures of the final product in a few weeks.  I added bizarre
flying butresses protruding from the left and right entrances.  It looks
like the side of the building has been yanked through the front - a very
deconstructivist feature!

(...) Wow, that's actually pretty neat. Gives me some ideas as to how I'm going to do my planned town/space hybrid (town 2170, something like that). (25 years ago, 2-Mar-00, to lugnet.build.arch)

A sturdy gothic arch.... I'll have to think about that one. I'll keep you posted if my brain comes up with something Silas (25 years ago, 2-Mar-00, to lugnet.build.arch)
