Yes, one of the members of my club (BayLUG) used the same technique to build a
water tower for our train layout. Actually, we have two water towers: the
smaller diameter one is built using 1x2 log bricks and 1x1 round bricks, which
is very flimsy but looks great.
For an even larger radius, just build a wall out of overlapping 1x2 bricks -
there’s enough play to make a nice curve. It bends nicely, and forms a smooth
wall.
