Thanks, Bram. The 45-degree bump-outs along the sides is a pretty common design
feature of 20-th century American churches. Carrying it around all the walls
made the LEGO implementation easier (the roof would otherwise have odd-shaped
panels), and happened to look good. The second tier, which is what I believe
gives it the almost-fractal look, is another LEGO implementation feature (it
makes the roof beams shorter) that just happened to look good. When I thought
of this design it occurred to me that I could build a very small representation
of it using basic bricks, with 1x1's being the size of the lower bump-outs.
This made the design even more appealing, and I was able to very easily test
the proportions. The full-size church is slightly taller than those
proportions.
