Hi Lutz,
Yes, a fence is the saw attachment which guides the material being cut.

The fence is the object like a wall on the right hand side of the blade.
That's the kind which would be used for eg cutting up sheets of plywood or
making lengthwise cuts in pieces of wood. Crosscuts use a different kind of
fence which I haven't worked out how to do in Lego yet, it's too small :-)
Using a table saw without a fence is dangerous because it's close to
impossible to keep the workpiece running absolutely straight through the
blade area without one. If the workpiece does not run straight, it can bind
against the blade and jam up. If the workpiece is small enough the blade can
grab and throw it off the saw very hard - I have a friend who was knocked
unconscious by a piece of wood flung at him from a tablesaw.
Of course even without the safety aspect, if you want to saw a straight line
a fence is very useful. Most (all?) table saws come with a fence when you
buy them, as well as a blade guard.
