I have to say something in Keith's defence. Straight canals and higly
profiled embankments are not uncommon in Japan's coastal regions. In the
19th century for instance, Dutch hydraulic engineers contributed to
extensive river regulation works. Man like 'Johannis de Rijke' en 'George
Arnold Escher' who's names are still famous in Japan today. And I just
learned from a site that 'G.A. Escher' was the father of the well known
graphic artist 'M.C Escher'
