I started a thread over on lugnet.cad.dev about a part I had made at home.
I'm including an snippet of the original message here:

First, I have wondered how the community feels about the creation of
non-standard parts. By this I mean parts that TLG has not created ( at
least not to my knowledge ). For example, many years ago went I become
involved with LEGO sets which I purchased for my children and found that I
spent as much time "playing" as they did, I always wanted to have a
universal connection part ( perhaps this is not the best description, but • it
is the best I can think of at the moment ) which never seemed to appear in
any of the kits --- oops, I mean sets. Having grown up building model kits
and doing a lot of kit bashing I used those skills to produce my own.
Taking two 1 x 1 plates, filling the hole side with putty, then sanding to
half thickness and lastly cementing the two halves together I had the part • I
wanted.

What I found was that others have also used this method.  Most referenced
the 1 X 1 with side loop as being the element modified.  Actually, one
person would clip the part into two pieces and the other came from from a
reference to the Gender Changer thread in this group in which the part was
already broken in two.

Now, after all that, what I'm wondering is; are there any other little tips
or tricks along this line out there.  Putting aside any other manufacturer's
parts and remaining strictly with LEGO, that is.

Roy
