I'm not entirely certain. It just seems like there's more stuff in this
ship. Much of it is the size of things-- the two-wide staircase up to
the gunners' turret takes much less space than the ladderways I'd put
in to my ship. The bridge is quite space-economical, probably in part due
to the front two crew positions being (what looks like) a little lower.

The floor is at the same level, but the cap'n's chair is elevated. I used
thin walls on the sides so I could inset the window.

I think the particularly important thing I'll be taking from this design
is that outward is generally a better idea than upward. Upward means you
have to cut holes in decks for ladders (or lifts!) which burns notable
amounts of otherwise good space. (It also means you wind up doing odd
stuff on the deck below so that you don't have a plate hanging out in
the middle of nowhere with nothing to attach to on the other side...

Yeah, that part is hard to compensate for. However, one option is to build a
staircase or lift at one central location... then you don't have to disrupt
structural integrity.

I'm also probably likely to bogart the airlock design. That's one I
suspect it won't be long before it becomes a de-facto .space standard. :)

We can thank Wayne for that. I bogart'ed it from him. :^) It's ok, though...
he intended it to be free for all.

Another thing I've made note of is the better use of what might otherwise
be "wasted" space-- a good example on Bricriu is the yellow pipe and the
valve in the area just aft of the bridge. That would have been just a flat
chunk of floor in my previous designs.

Yeah. I prefer the sort of "submarine interior" look, where there isn't any
wasted space at all. They cram equipment into every bit of available space.
Watch "The Hunt for Red October" or "Crimson Tide" for examples of this.
Those are ICBM boats as well, which are the most spacious submarines. I hope
to try to continue this look throughout the rest of the ship. :^)

(...) That's a me-too. I've already printed the pictures and will be dissecting the design later. I like the slide mechanism the door uses before it swings out. That saves space since it can be incorporated into the airlock wall. The other nice (...) (23 years ago, 6-Feb-01, to lugnet.build, lugnet.space)
