Speaking of fixing minifigs, I've thought about taking some flat black
acryllic paint, using a 000 brush to paint on those fading eyes and mouths,
then coating 'em with a quick spray of matte finish (like Krylon).

Does anyone know if this will damage the plastic? I've seen matte spray
literally melt styrofoam.

While I've not tried it myself (on Lego anyway), I should think that if you
kept your distance while spraying so that the clearcoat was nearly dry by the
time it hit the ABS surface, you should be fine. Letting the clearcoat to sit
wet is what allows it to eat into the substrate - including acrylic paint.

Also, I would recommend using a clear gloss material rather than matte.
Primarily personal bias here, but also the matte-ness is usually achieved by
use of a pigment of some type or other, which can make the clearcoat thicker
than the same coverage of gloss. A microscopic difference, but in terms of lego
tolerances it may become an issue if the clear collects at the base of a stud.

Hey, there's a thought - perhaps a way to rejuvenate loose studs?

One last thing, I'd recommend using Grumbacher Tuffilm Clear Gloss. You do have
to be careful at the application stage as with any chem-based spray, but once
this stuff has had a chance to harden all the way through (dries quick but
let it sit a couple days), it's really resilient. At least it holds up well on
my R/C racecars. Which get crashed. A lot. :)

Again, I've not done this with Lego, so I'm just offering up an educated guess.
YMMV, as they say.

Cheers,
KMaynes

(...) That sounds good, Kevin. I'll give it a try...and live with it if it doesn't work. Is that Grumbacher, as in model trains and stuff? Guess I'll take a trip to the local hobby train shop. Peace, Pat (24 years ago, 26-Jan-01, to lugnet.build)
