I'd say: start by downloading some building instructions from Brickshelf.
Take 8860 for instance, to start with a nice oldie. Have a look at the
ever-present 8880 for the other end of the scale.

And of course, check out the pictures I'll be putting on one of these days
of a crane chassis with 6 steering wheels...

Could you maybe be more specific on what you're after? Maybe I could give
you some tips....
