I got a note offline asking about how I do the inset doors on my box
cars.

They were clear on how to start an offset using 1x2 tiles with center
stud, but unclear on how to tie the door back in at the top.

here's what I said in response:

There are a number of techniques to support things at the top.
Basically, your need is to return the 1/2 stud offset back to the
alignment of the rest of the car, and do it in as little vertical
distance as possible (or else your roof is too thick)

One very easy one is to just use another layer of 1x2 tiles with center
stud at the top of the door, oriented the same way as the first layer,
with the outer edge flush with the door. The studs on top are now back
in line.

Another way is to take advantage of the fact that 2xN plates have holes
on the bottom that studs can plug into. If you put a layer of 1x2 tiles
turned 90 degrees on top, now their studs line up with the holes on the
bottom of the plate.

Another trick is one that I used on my caboose. If the top row of the
door is made up of bricks that have studs with holes (technic bricks,
windows, hinge bricks), the holes will mate with the rods on the bottom
of 1xn plates.

(this in fact is what Bram was referring to in the 1x1 with side stud
thread, I realise now. The side stud is one of those parts with holes in
the studs!)
