Can you expand on that a bit? Do you mean by turning the beam
sideways??

A technic beam has the little rods on the bottom, just like any other 1x
plate or brick.  If you turn the side-stud brick sideways, with the side
stud facing up, you can attach it to the bottom of the technic beam so
that the little rod goes into the hole in the middle of the side-stud.
You can then add a technic pin through the technic hole.  See
lugnet.cad.dat to see what I mean.
