A reference was given in lugnet.robotics to a paper called "The Art of
LEGO Design". To me, it sounded like an architecture piece--how to
design asthetically pleasing models. Which would have been a pretty
cool article, but I was wrong. This article is full of basic
information about using gears in LEGO constructions. I wish I had known
about this article a long time ago!
Anyway, I figured I couldn't be the only person who could use this link,
so here it is:
<ftp://cherupakha.media.mit.edu/pub/people/fredm/artoflego.pdf>
Notice that it this is a Adobe Acrobat file. I don't know if there is
an HTML version available (sorry, I haven't looked that hard).

| (...) I got this when it first surfaced. Highly recommended. I'd say it has saved me 30% of my fiddle time when doing mechanisms. Since I'm not mechanical, that's pretty significant. (26 years ago, 5-Jan-99, to lugnet.build)
