I like your design, but I don't think the tiles are neccessary.

I thought so too, but several frustrated hours (and designs) later, I concluded
they were.  This is mostly because I was trying for a solid spiral, not an
open-below (I did play with one or two designs, but Katrine's is cleaner).
The open-below designs just didn't look right in my keep - it needed something
more solid.

I have another possibility bouncing around in the back of my head, but don't
have enough of the 1/2 3x3 bricks to do it.

(...) concluded (...) Well, if they're not necessary, they might be required if one wants a "solid stair" look. Castles that use "stone" staircases most certainly can benefit by this, unless it's a wooden staircase in which case it's the wrong (...) (26 years ago, 5-Jan-99, to lugnet.build)
