get the Town Jr. sets, say, in the first place?  Why not get the Basic
sets instead?  As far as I can see, they have a very nice selection of
pieces, at a fair price.

For me this issue is mainly about giving gifts to children. If *I* am
looking for parts for a MOC I will probably never leave the realm of
technic. If I am, on the other hand, looking for a gift for a younger child
I would like (and in the past had no problem) to find a set that initially
excites the child with "cool" stock models, but provides them with enough
pieces (both in quantity and diversity) to build their own designs. I always
use to think of the models pictured in the instructions as nothing more than
a source for inspiration and building tips for young builders. Now the
pictured model (on non technic sets) seems to be a demonstration of what
kind of things the set is limited to.

What you say about freestyle/basic buckets/tubs being a great source for
building stock is certainly true, but in the case of younger children I have
found that they will be *much* more drawn to a construction set with
instructions to give them a "starting point." However if the construction
set is so limited that they can only build certain kinds of things with it
they will quickly become bored with it. What LEGO always excelled was
balancing both of these considerations such that you had a fire station that
could also make a great spaceship, and all from ONE set! Now perhaps I am
just getting too old for my imagination to jump through the hoops necessary
to get from fire station to spaceship, but I do not see this balance in the
LEGO (system) sets of today.

In all honesty the lack of quality set design does not really affect *my*
designs, but it sure does leave me frustrated when it comes time to give
children's gifts. I truly feel sorry for children (not old enough for
technic) who are getting into LEGO for the first time, if the sets had been
like this when I was a child I might have just stuck my sets in the closet
and moved on to another toy.
