Hey Steve,
CO2 is a good idea, but how do you set them off? I've only seen C02 in
those little pellet gun-sized cartridges and paintball gun cartridges.
That's definitely something to think about as the MegaBloks plate got a bit
melted from the parachute charge (as you saw). That might be remedied by
using a multistage engine, or as was suggested to me, have the engine
pointing slightly downward.
