My question is this, how many other LEGO elements are there that are
100% metal? I have some of the old wheels that had little metal axles
embedded in plastic hubs, but I can't think of any pieces that are all
metal.

any ideas?

This one's only part metal, the spring-loaded bucket scoop on 490-1 Mobile
Crane:

So, after you break the scoop (inevitable) you're left with a silly scoop and a
free metal spring. Is that close?

This accident also works with the spring-loaded forklift. And if you were
really bad you could get a metal crank out of 372-2 http://www.lugnet.com/
