You've got the right idea here, and unfortunately TLC has once again passed
on to the builder the responsibility for fixing the problems with their models.
These kits should come with a "punch list" in the instructions that has
everything that's wrong with them, just like in real-life construction. But
maybe this is what TLC is trying to foster - release simple, easily constructed
sets so that kids imaginations take over and they build the model like it
should have been built.
I personally am not going to spend $76 (6464 MSRP, for example) on a
"fixer-upper" though. I buy sets for the main model and think it should be
essentially complete after it's built. I shouldn't have to go in and make
modifications or add pieces. I like sets you can build, rotate 360 degrees and
say, "hey, that's a nice model, I don't think there's anything I can add to
that." Then I'd buy a duplicate to build the alternative models, and a third
for parts for other projects. The first one stays intact because it's so nice
to look at.
So until those days return, I've given up on Town - which I've been building in
since the early 70s :*(
