Yes, I really agree. When building small models, you have the
possibility to explore almost any possible design solution and find the
best one.

Yes, something like that sounds right.
I couldn't get any further in my design because I really wanted to use
the LD#4596 "Space Wing 4 x 2" (needs a better name, IMO) as the
connector on the trailer:

This would look very cool and realistic, IMO, but I couldn't find a way
to connect it to the truck. Of course, I could also have used the
LD#2508 "Plate 1 x 2 with Long Towball", but that would be too long, I
think, especially since there would be the need for a clumsy looking
female towball connector on the truck as well:
