The more like a photograph your image becomes, the more you'll want to
use JPG. For the renderings on your site, you may lose a lot of detail
by reducing colors to save as GIF. Less detail might be lost by just
increasing the compression (decreasing the quality) for the JPG, and you
can get the file size down smaller. With Corel PhotoPaint (the program I
use), I've been surprised with how much detail is kept, even at 60-70%
compression. (Most of my 640x480 photos/raytraces get at least 50%
compression)
