FWIW, they are often called tiles to avoid ambiguity.
Just thought I'd mention it.

| Oops! How did I do that? Yes, I meant tiles, of course. The set 6584 has 14 1 x 6 *tiles* like I described, not plates. I must have read the subject line and got confused. (...) (25 years ago, 16-Jul-99, to lugnet.build)
