I need to get some advice as to how to paint one of my XL baseplates. What is the best way? Spray can, dipping, or what? Also dd Lego ever build a baseplate that was smooth on a good portion of it? I thought I saw one somewhere, but have never been (...) (19 years ago, 7-Aug-05, to lugnet.build)

(...) Larry, although I can't help you with the painting part of your question, I can with the smooth baseplate question.... There were many instance of baseplates with smooth areas. The one that comes to mind are the Homemaker sets of 1972-82. Some (...) (19 years ago, 7-Aug-05, to lugnet.build)

(...) Larry, Perhaps if we knew what you were planning, we might be able to suggest something non-LEGO related to help. If you want something mostly smooth, wouldn't you be better off with just a sheet of plastic styrene? They come in different (...) (19 years ago, 7-Aug-05, to lugnet.build)

(...) Seconded. I would suggest an acrylic hobby paint, such as Tamiya, Gunze Sangyo, Testors, or Polly Scale. There's other brands, as well -- see your local hobby shop (bring the baseplate and explain what you're trying to do, and they can (...) (19 years ago, 8-Aug-05, to lugnet.build, FTX)
