While I agree that your use of the smiley/grumpy bricks is great (salvages an otherwise pretty unusable printed brick), it does point out a problem:

I have a hard time seeing them as anything other than grumpy bricks.

Of course, to a non-Lego person, this detail wouldn’t even be noticed. And to someone well-versed in using pieces in non-traditional ways, it probably seems effortless. But to me, I stuggle with these sorts of things. There is a word I am looking for to describe it - myopia? I have a hard time seeing pieces being used outside their usual function. I have the same problem trying to build in any orientation other than studs up. What can be done to alleviate this building block?

I have the same problem with the smiley/frowny bricks. I even thought about it as I was looking at the pictures. I thought it was really creative but it didn’t look right to me, cause I’ve always seen them as the smiley/frowny bricks. I found myself thinking it was a really good use of them, and that anyone who didn’t usually play with LEGO wouldn’t know they were smiley/frowny bricks, but I hade a huge problem seeing them as anything else. I kept looking at the picture and squinting to see if I could find them believable as something else. Didn’t work, but oh well. It’s still very creative and looks good. I just need a better imagination.
