I guess it's time to unveil what may be interesting news
to the LUGNET community....

Up here in Owen Sound, Ontario, the local hospital approached
me to get ideas for a kickoff event for the fundraiser we're
having for an MRI machine.

Their first idea was a life sized MRI machine made of LEGO....

Then I showed them some of the wonderful mosaics by Henry Lim
and Eric Harshbarger, and they liked the idea.

Thanks to Kerry George at Lego Canada, Jake McKee from Lego USA,
and Steve Barile, I can announce that we are in the final stages
of a very large community build mosaic.

It involves 40 baseplates arranged in a 5x8 grid that measures
6 feet tall by 10 feet long. Just over 92,000 individual 1x1
plates are arranged to form the image of an MRI machine along
with the local hospital's fundraising campaign logo.

Sadly, the requirement that the LEGO logo was to be aligned on
all the 1x1's was not passed on soon enough :-)

The kits were distributed to local schools so that kids could
get a chance to build one of the panels. On June 8, we'll be putting
the panels together to reveal the final image.

Today, 10 of the kis were assembled by a group of gifted kids
from the local school board in the town library. As a special
treat, Janey Cook brought some of her wonderful MOCs for
display. Needless to say, the kids were more impressed by
her sculptures than the actual mosaic kits :-)

This would not have been possible without support from LEGO, and
without Steve's fantasic mosaic making software that allowed us
to organize 40 kits of baseplates and bags of 1x1's into pizza
boxes in less than an hour!

I will post pictures soon, and I think the local newspaper will
have a story on this tomorrow. It's really been a lot of fun
to get involved with the fundraiser and to make LEGO an integral
part of this community effort.

Thanks again, LEGO!

Cheers, Ralph

(...) Wow, that would have been *huge*. Perhaps the biggest community-build by AFOLs so far, had it happened? -Tim (20 years ago, 27-May-04, to lugnet.build.sculpture, lugnet.loc.ca.on.tor, lugnet.build)
