I watched this very interesting thread (starting with discussion about
SW set assembling, moving through building exhaustion and sorting
problems and finally ending with Gungan Sub) for some time.

It hit me at one point:

How does everyone sort their pieces?

I never had some fixed sorting  system, it was changing permanently
(depending of quantity of pieces) and now it is more or less static. My
LEGO collection is not large (only about 12-13.000 pieces) so sorting is
not a big problem.

Usually I build new sets by instructions only once - to see how model
looks like - and after that take it apart sorting into boxes. Only few
models survived from this barbarian treatment (mainly blck-yellow RESQ
sets). Some sets were not even assembled - their parts came immediatly
into boxes...

So I looked carefully how my LEGO parts are sorted for very first time
and tried to write it down.

And now I know - I am sorting by size (shape) and designation (tools,
weapons etc.) Colour does not matter - it is not difficult to find
necessary colour if parts are sorted by size.

I use cardboard boxes which fit nice into my book-shelf. They are A4
sized (originally they were used to store some manuals and magazines in
my office). They are deeper (10cm) and flatter (5cm). Usually I start
from flat one and when it is full - I move to deeper one.
1. 1x plates - all sizes
2. 2x plates - all sizes
3. 4x, 6x etc. plates
4. 2x1 and 3x1 bricks
5. 4x1 bricks
6. 2x2 and 2x3 bricks
7. 4x2 bricks
8. 6x1, 8x1 etc., 6x2, 8x2 etc. long bricks
9. fences, ladders, bars etc.
10. sloped bricks
11. reverse sloped bricks
12. architectural parts (arches, 5 studs long bricks, big roof slopes
etc.)
13. architectural doors and windows
14.non-standard plates (wings etc.)
15. car parts (bases, hoses, winches, brackets, exaust pipes etc.)
16. rounds (1 stud height, small cones, big turntables)
17. all Technic parts (with additional subdivision into separate small
plastic boxes for gears, connectors, different pins, bushes)
18. boats, bikes, motobicycles and tricycles
19. space wheels, old gears
20. boat and spaceship parts
20. miscellaneus (small turntables, grill plates, 1x2 hinges)

One big cardboard box contains BURPS, ship hulls, stairs and another big
stuff

Smaller cardboard boxes are used for:
1. aquazone parts, big spce cones and cement mixer cones atc.
2. L-angled bricks

I have few big cardboard boxes subdivided into sections:
1. plants, palm trees, furniture and barrels, 1x1 bricks
2. car windows according different shapes
3. pannels, train parts, spaceship parts etc.

Medium sized plastic boxes are used for:
1. all wheel holders and plane wheelas
2. all rubber wheels
3. airplane, helicopter and spaceship parts (propellors, engines etc.)

Oh, may be too much details so finally I can say that 28 small plastic
boxes (some with subdivision into sections) are used to separate small
items such as different weaponry, tools, helmets and caps, different 1x1
plates etc. etc.

I am satisfied with such sorting - it allowes me to have all the stuff
on and around my bed (my favorite place to build). Of course I can
imagine that when I will cross 20-30.000 parts - I will need to invent
something different (already now some boxes are close to full - and I
happy with this ;-)
