This doesn't compare to the great MOCs on LUGNET, but it was a fun little
project.
Two years ago Legoland California sold a U.S. flag kit with red, white and blue
bricks. There was a clear sticker with the white stars printed on it. The
overall look was good, but I did not buy one because I didn't care for the
sticker stars.
When I saw the 10042 flag kit, I bought one. I think the kit is very effective,
even though it's pretty simple (the $.01 kit from Shop at Home was even
better!). The use of the blue technic bricks with round holes, and half couplers
for stars intrigued me. The flag stripes in 10042 are 1 plate high. I wondered
how the idea could be scaled up. I sketched out on brick paper a flag with
stripes 1 brick high. Then I worked on the star pattern. It turned out that the
50 star pattern was just 1 plate lower than the 7 adjacent brick stripes. At
first having to add an extra blue plate thickness bothered me, but it was
actually good to help bridge separate blue brick columns that weren't otherwise
connected.
