I agree that less can be more. Sometimes I jump-start by making abstract Lego
designs, i.e. geometrical pieces or 2-d patterns. Or by making a bunch of the
same, *little* thing (e.g. a school of fish, or a set of spinning tops in four
colors).

I also get inspired by getting together with (gasp) actual *kids* to play with
some subset of my collection. You want fresh ideas, they've got fresh ideas!
(At least the kids I know do.)

Deciding to find a use for the most unusable pieces I own has led to some nice
"not ready for Brickshelf" creations, e.g. the Bobbsey Twins (=Max, Tina + 2
minifigs) and their clubhouse (featuring those big chunky doors and windows).

If I'm really devoid of inspiration, sometimes I just lay some bricks on the
table and arrange them into columns or rectangles. Somehow it clears a psychic
space where ideas can then come up. A new form of meditation?

Start with a *limited* amount of pieces.  I always find that necessity
breeds invention, though others may disagree.  With me, I have my pieces
