Timothy,
I think you make a good point. Here are some scenerios to ponder:
1) Think of a person who spends 40 hours planning a design in LCAD, raises
the money for the parts it will take to build, and then spends a few hours
building/tweaking. That person has put much effort into his/her creation.
That person then publishes their creation on a public server, for all to
view. This person's intent is most likely to showcase his/her creation to
the public to either receive recognition or to inspire others. This is a
good thing.
2) Not only does it inspire others, but someone loves the design so much
they choose to replicate the design as best they can, so they can use it for
play, or to put in a diorama, or to display at work. This is a good thing.
3) Next, the second individual decides to take pictures of the replicated
creation and post pictures for the public to view. He/She neglects to give
any credit to the original designer of the MOC. NOT necessarily a good thing.
I believe this is what causes some people to be a bit gun-shy about "using"
other people's ideas.
I admit, I have seen some outstanding ideas on Brickshelf, and have printed
out pictures, and even attempted to replicate the design. However, this was
for my own personal fun, and never considered taking pictres and publishing
them as my own.
Technically, if MOC or designs are published on a public forum, the idea is
that anyone can "take" them. However, as a curteousy; please (attempt to)
make sure credit is given to the original designer when sharing.
