Hi,

Woah talk about inexperienced.  I've never built a house from my own
imagination before.  I never knew it would be this difficult.

I have the exterior of a house built; It's roughly the shape of a rectangle,
44x30 studs, and 11 bricks high.  I was starting to build the roof with 45
degree roof bricks (don't have enough 33 degree ones) until I made a
startling discovery.  I just realized that by the time I reach the peak, the
roof will be much taller than the house itself!

So could someone with experience in this kinda thing give me/us some simple
guidelines as to how big of a building to build before the roof gets out of
hand?

Well, looking at the houses across the street from mine, most of them seem
to have roofs about as tall as a story.  But then if it's a Tudor style,
sometimes the roofs are much much steeper.  I agree with Amy's comment to
add dormers or gables to try and break up the expanse of roof a bit.
