How would one do the rear landing gear? The wheel stays vertical when the
landing gear is both retracted and extended, but it moves diagonally. (from
stowed, it moves down and out from the plane's fuselage.) Another difficulty
on this - not only does it have to move at an angle, but it also has to
support the plane's weight, which, since the PBY is a fairly good sized
plane (8 crew members) is respectable.

With my PB4Y, I found that the landing gear wasn't strong enough to
hold up the plane, so I cheated and built a display stand for it.
This has the added advantage of being able to demonstrate the raising
and lowernig of the wheels without having to pick up the model.  I'm
not sure how big the PBY is, but the 4Y has a 110 foot wingspan, which
translates to 110 studs.  I think the PBY is a bit smaller, but still
quite big.

If I were you I'd be more worried about the hull shape.  The PBY is a
very curvy plane.  I had a much easier job with the 4Y because it is
pretty boxy in real life.

As for the mechanism of the wheels, probably the easiest way would be
to use the Technic 1x4 plate with teeth (rack), mounted on a 1xN
plate.  Attaching the wheels will be tricky though.  Probably
something can be arranged using Technic angle connectors but it will
be an interesting task.

I'd recommend motorizing the wheel movement, and not trying to make
them strong enough to support the model.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the
PBY.

And another thing - am I going to have to verify that I posted EVERY
freaking post I make? Its REALLY annoying having to check my email after I
post a single message.

You could use the web interface; if you're logged in, there's no need
to confirm.  I often do that when posting, even though I browse using
the NNTP interface.  Also, when I do post via NNTP, I usually do all
the confirmation e-mails in a single batch after I'm done reading
LUGNET for a while, rather than confirming each message as I post it.
