I think that the main reason that the studs fit tightly in the sides of the technic beams is that there is no 'give' in the plastic that grips the stud, as is there typically when they connect to the bottom of a brick, or a plate, or what have you. (...) (25 years ago, 15-Dec-99, to lugnet.build)

I reexamined my rack-and-pinion design, and couldn't find another easy-to-implement way to mount the bricks, other than the studs-in-axle holes method. (...) I don't think it's correct that such a configuration was unintended. In fact, I think it most definitely *was* intended. All the classic LEGO measurements are magic multiples of 1/5 the standard interstud spacing, which also equals 1/6 the (...) (25 years ago, 15-Dec-99, to lugnet.robotics, lugnet.build)
