   Hi all,

For the last few years I've been building big warships, and a
single persistent problem--casemates--has been driving me up
the proverbial wall.  It's impossible to get fitting gun shields
to produce casemates as appear on ships built between about 1905
and 1930, as in this image taken from www.combinedfleet.com scans
of the model box for the Japanese battleship Mutsu:

   http://www.msu.edu/user/braunli1/casemate-0.jpg (those six in the
   middle.)

I'm happy to report that I may have solved it with a technique
that could have other applications for military builders or
anyone who needs an "installed" swivel mount.  It makes use
of the Technic rings found in the UCS X-Wing, the Search Sub,
and the Red Bird Mach II Rig, a few macaroni, and a 4x4x2 cone.
My 16 rings were kindly traded to me by Cary Clark, but I need
MORE...MORE!  (Well, macaroni too, but doesn't everyone?)

The shots of the small section I built:

   Outboard:

   http://www.msu.edu/user/braunli1/casemate-2.jpg
   http://www.msu.edu/user/braunli1/casemate-4.jpg (my favourite!)

   Inboard:
   http://www.msu.edu/user/braunli1/casemate-3.jpg

The part I had never been able to get was the inboard-
outboard swivel matching.  The ring solves that as it has
two axle holes!  The back section of the cannon is a wee
bit long, but it's just there for show.  Ideally I could
find a way to put the gun in the hollow of the casemate (as
it was in reality) but...nah.  Selective compression is my
   friend!

I imagine this construction could be turned sideways and used
to make an elevating gun mount to be placed in a turret, or
heightened by using half-cylinders and Naboo Fighter canopies
(opaque ones if you want to tail the underside off into a hull).
I imagine this might have applications to .space builders as
well (thus the dipping of this thread there).

   all best

   Lindsay

(...) That looks cool. It could also have applications for side mount guns on tanks. (24 years ago, 8-Jun-01, to lugnet.build)

I like these a lot. I am very bad at building guns. This is a design I could use. Very cool. -Jon (...) (24 years ago, 11-Jun-01, to lugnet.build, lugnet.space)
