I’ve been expanding the Grand Armie of the South Pacifique, and developing some heavy artillery. Whilst building limbers, I discovered I could fit a five-wide seat between large carriage wheels. While this was all well and good for the Grand Armie, Port Brique has been crying out for some civilian land transport for some time. It’s a prosperous place these days, and people have been complaining about having to walk from place to place.

So I’ve built some civilian transport (although the large carriage has been hired by the Brikkish Ambassador, and he’s using the Port Brick Regiment to man it)...

I’ve built three styles so far:

Hansom-style cab

Luxury carriage

Surrey

The cab and the surrey are based on the limber from Fort Legoredo, with 1x1 round plates being used to anchor a 3x2 plus 2x2 plate between 2x1 (or 4x1) panels, and a 1x4 tile. At the right height, this fits the 5x2 seat between the rims. You can see the technique in these pics of the surrey:

1x1 round plates attached to the 4-wide axle. Surrounded by tile (front) and panel (rear) the 3x2 and 2x2 seat plates are resting on the horse...

The plates in place, fitting snuggly between the wheels.

The carriage is a bit more complex, and significantly more fragile (but not too fragile). It is basically a five-wide construction anchored to four wide axles. Some articulation of the front axle is possible.

The underside, showing the change from four wide/five wide construction. The 2x2 turntable, and the rear 1x4 axle are attached using 2x1 tiles with one stud.

Here’s some more pics of the carriages:

(...) Nifty. What would help would be some pics from the top (or, angled from the top) after the 5 wide car thingie is included. Thanks for sharing! (21 years ago, 3-Aug-03, to lugnet.pirates, lugnet.town, FTX)
