Two web-interface changes are being put into place today.  These affect
posting only -- not browsing or searching.

The first change is mostly transparent and cosmetic -- and you don't need to
do anything except to make a mental note that some changes are taking place.

The second change affects all users of the system (not immediately, but you
should still read this entire message).

Details:

1.  Four scripts are being renamed and relocated:

       /news/compose.cgi     is becoming   /news/post/
       /news/post.cgi        is becoming   /news/post/submit.cgi
       /news/setup/          is becoming   /news/post/setup/
       /news/setup/save.cgi  is becoming   /news/post/setup/submit.cgi

The reason for this is so that the browser cookie which stores your user
info can match up with the /news/post/ URL tree and not the /news/ URL
tree.  In other words, your browser will send your user-info cookie only
    when you're in a /news/post/ URL (i.e., posting) -- because it's a waste
of bandwidth to have it send that info for pages you access outside of
    the posting area.

When you re-run the setup script, the old cookie (called 'NEWS') will be
deleted from your browser and the new cookie (called 'NEWSPOST') will be
    added to replace it.

2.  Filling out a form at the /news/post/setup/ page will be a requirement
before posting.  (Not each time, of course -- only once.)

    The reasons for this are:

    a.  To formalize and assist in the administration of 'From:' lines.
(See the recent threads in lugnet.admin.general for more info.)

    b.  To have a cleaner unified setup in one location (instead of spread
across the old post.cgi and the old save.cgi).

These changes are not in place as of this posting, but are ready to be moved
into place incrementally today (hopefully within the next hour).

Thoughout the day today, you will still be able to post as you normally do
now, but you should fill out this form as soon as possible...

   http://www.lugnet.com/news/post/setup/

...so that when the From-line validation is turned on tomorrow, your posts
won't be rejected.

Stay tuned for more details.

--Todd

p.s.  This is not a policy change, but a procedure change.  You can still
use nicknames and spamblocks.  You just won't be able to type garbage into
From lines anymore.
