We need to add a clickable "Search" button next to the newsgroup search
boxes at the top of most pages, due to a forms bug in Microsoft Internet
Explorer (and possibly other Netscape clones).

This was based on outdated information.  Although the LUGNET server still has
to take into account bugs like this in old versions of MSIE, recent versions
do not appear to have this bug.  Thus, it seems that it will be safe to show
or hide the Search button based on the browser (or "user agent") string
passed to the server when a page is requested.

The problem is that the 'Enter' key works correctly in MSIE pages containing
a single, simple edit-box HTML form, but not in pages containing multiple
HTML forms, even if those forms are all simply edit boxes.  Thus, MSIE
actually sometimes requires an HTML form to have an actual Submit button.

The word "sometimes" above reffered to definite bugness in MSIE3 and an
uncertainty about subsequent versions on multiple platforms.  I'm going to
insert some code which causes the Search button a the top only to show up
when the browser reports its type as MSIE3 or earlier.  (Believe it or not
there are still people out there using MSIE2 and MSIE3 with LUGNET.)

[...]
If your browser of choice is Microsoft Internet Explorer, then you won't
probably notice any change in behavior either, except on pages which contain
more than one HTML form.  In those cases, you'll have to click the form's
Submit button manually with the mouse or with Tab-Enter.

The above statement was not an entirely correct.  Recent versions of MSIE
have corrected the defect which required an explicit form button.

Please direct any complaints regarding this to your browser vendor.

If you do still see problems of this nature, and you're not running MSIE,
please report the bug to your browser vendor, and if you could also let me
know, I could add your browser to the list of browsers which have the bug,
so that the LUGNET server can generate pages for you which do have the
Search button.  Thanks...
