Put the 'Toy of the Millennium' Under the Tree With a Little Help From LEGOLAND
California
CARLSBAD, Calif., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Now parents can find the "Toy of the
Millennium," a "Product of the Century," the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum
Award winner and the "Parent's Choice" together in one place -- the shops at
LEGOLAND(R) California.
Noted toy experts and analysts have commended products from each step of the
LEGO(R) System of Play this holiday season. And all the major toys being
honored, says LEGOLAND Retail Director Kimberly Adams, are currently in stock
at
the Carlsbad family theme Park.
"The products are flying off the shelves," Adams said, "but we're staying on
top
of the demand. It seems everyone has seen a story where LEGO toys or CD-ROM
games are recommended as the perfect choice for smart, happy kids."
"We were particularly impressed that after half a century, LEGO is still
extremely popular with both children and adults," said Christine Chen,
co-writer
of a Fortune Magazine article naming the venerable plastic brick one of the
"Products of the Century." "We also liked the fact that LEGO is a truly global
brand, and that the colorful bricks appeal to both boys and girls who can play
with them alone or with others. They're versatile, they stimulate creativity
and, most of all, they're fun."
Listeners of a Top 20 radio station in San Diego went a step further, voting
the
LEGO brick "The Top Toy of the Millennium."
Both honors are part of a record-breaking number of awards presented to the
LEGO
line this holiday season. More than 100 new products were introduced in 1999,
with the LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) and LEGO Star Wars lines at the top of the list in
sales. In making their announcements, many experts cited the products' ability
to simultaneously entertain youngsters while challenging them to imagine and
create.
"Douglas Copeland, a Canadian author, once described LEGO as being the
universal
language of children that comes alive when driven by the imagination," said
Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, President and CEO of the LEGO Company.
During the corporation's nearly seven decades, it has moved from producing
wooden toys to plastic bricks to intelligent robotics inventions systems. The
line now includes LEGO baby and preschool toys, LEGO play theme sets, LEGO
TECHNIC(R) toys for the more advanced builder, CD-ROM games and high-tech LEGO
MINDSTORMS(TM) robotics sets.
Throughout 67 years of innovation, 1999 definitely tops the list as the most
award-winning year in LEGO history.
The LEGO DUPLO(R) preschool line received several awards, including a Platinum
and two Gold Seals from the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio. The Deluxe Harbor Highway
was named a winner of Dr. Toy's 100 Best Children's Products for 1999 and the
Light and Sound Rescue Center received two awards -- one from Parent's Choice
and from Parent's Guide. In addition, the LEGO DUPLO line recently received
the
most prestigious Award of Excellence by the Canadian Toy Testing Council
(CTTC).
The LEGO Star Wars assortment launched imaginations into hyperdrive in 1999 and
received one Platinum and four Gold Seals from the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio. It
also was granted the Children's Choice Award by the CTTC.
The new LEGO SYSTEM Space Port Countdown Corner toy received The National
Parenting Center's 1999 Seal of Approval and was a Parents' Choice Award
Winner.
The Space Port Mission Control set received the Children's Media Award from
Parents' Guide and the Gold Seal from the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio.
The LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics Discovery Set is a winner of Dr. Toy's 100 Best
Children's Products for 1999 and received the Seal of Approval from The
National
Parenting Center. The LEGO MINDSTORMS Droid Developer Kit was recognized by
the
National Parenting Publications Awards and received a Platinum Award from the
Oppenheim Toy Portfolio.
