PCS Academy of Engineering Site License Installed at Boys and Girls Club
of Ada County
PCS Education Systems, Inc. announced today that the official opening of
the Academy of Engineering program at the Boys and Girls Club of Ada
County will be on Thursday, February 25th, 1999, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Boys and Girls Club students and staff will be on-hand to demonstrate
the program and unveil a special grand-opening project constructed in
honor of National Engineers Week (February 21-27).
This exciting engineering education program has been made available
thanks to recent funding by a grant through the Idaho Community
Foundation made possible by the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation.
The Boys and Girls Club, located at 610 E. 42nd Street in Garden City,
Idaho, features an educational center equipped with donated computers
and program materials. The addition of the Academy of Engineering,
which includes an extensive LEGOTM inventory, curriculum, training, and
support services delivered via the Internet, will provide a new level of
service and opportunity to the kids who utilize the club.
Robert Grover, Executive Vice President of PCS, said of the
installation, "It is important for kids to understand the role engineers
play in our society, and the tremendous opportunities that are now
available for students pursuing technical career paths. This
engineering education program, designed and developed over the past ten
years, provides students with an awareness of engineering as a
profession as well as promotes the development of life-long learning
habits through exciting, hands-on challenges. I think all of the
individuals and organizations who have been involved in bringing this
program to the Boys and Girls Club are looking forward to seeing some of
these kids ending up at MIT or Stanford in the next ten years. That is
the true accomplishment we are all striving to achieve."
Other important contributing companies and organizations include Apexx
Technology, provider of a Team Internet connectivity solution for the
club. Team Internet provides a complete, secure Internet access
solution that enables the Boys and Girls Club to effectively provide
controlled Internet access to all of their workstations. Prior to the
contribution by Apexx, the club was limited to only one workstation that
was capable of Internet access. With the addition of the Team Internet
product, multiple workstations will be able to access the PCS Academy of
Engineering web services simultaneously. The Boise State University
Society of Women Engineers is also providing services to the Boys and
Girls Club and will be volunteering staff time to help promote
engineering careers to girls within the club.
