To answer both of the connection questions:

1. Connecting via the stud will force the cahin to make a "bend" to get
through the tail, and when placing the chain straight, the scorpion will
then be slightly rotated around the y-axis (sorry, done too much raytracing).

2. I tried putting the chain end directly on the tail, but the stinger
is in the way.

idea!

Couldn't you just poke the tails of the scorpions through the hole in
the chain end stud?  That way you wouldn't have to use the extra clip
element to connect the chain.  Or perhaps it can't be done?
