Comparing sexual orientation to geographic location is comparing apples and
oranges (and I'm certain it's demeaning/offensive to those who find sexual
orientation very important, to be compared to such an arbitrary thing as a
location). There are legitimate Lego-related reasons (such as organizing for
lego-related activities, and getting logistics worked out) to justify a .loc
area, and I don't see anyone putting forth any compelling Lego-related reasons
for a .GLBT group. What I do see is people putting forth "identity" and
"inclusiveness" reasons for it, but these are not Lego-related reasons.
In the case of the .loc group, the primary focus remains Lego (a lego event
here, a lego group there doing this, a lego contest over here); in the latter
.GLBT case, it's all about being GLBT, and the Lego part is not the primary
focus. The same could be said for a black or Catholic lego group - the primary
focus isn't on Lego, but the part that makes them separate.
People say the .space and .castle sub-groups do the same thing, but that's
completely incorrect. The primary focus of all sub-theme areas never changes
off the fact they are Lego groups dedicated to specific themes - their primary
reason for existence is Lego. Heck, even Lego breaks up their lines of sets
this way in the catalogs.
I continue to say it - these posts already have a place they can reside - in the
off-topic areas, or on a dedicated web site specifically for GLBTI? lego
builders who believe in the need for such a place.
